Hunter Valley Wine & Food Tours
Australia's oldest wine region. Bold shiraz, cool-climate semillon, and a food culture that's grown up alongside the vines — two hours from Sydney.
Why the Hunter Valley Is Australia's Wine Heartland
Two hours northwest of Sydney, the Hunter Valley is where Australian wine began — and where it learned to have a personality. The region's first vines were planted in the 1820s, and what started as an experiment has become one of the country's most diverse wine regions.
The Hunter's claim to fame is semillon — a white grape variety that, aged properly, produces some of the most interesting table wines in the country. Its most distinctive wine, though, is shiraz: rich, full-bodied, and capable of aging for decades. The region's restaurant and cellar door culture reflects this depth — places like Restaurant Hundred, Bistro Brodie, and the food offerings at many of the original family wineries make the Hunter as serious about food as it is about wine.
The region splits roughly into two areas: the Pokolbin basin (home to most cellar doors and restaurants) and the Upper Hunter (more rural, focused on larger operations). Tours typically concentrate on Pokolbin, where the density of wineries and restaurants makes for efficient, enjoyable days.

A Day on a Hunter Valley Food & Wine Tour
A typical full-day tour runs approximately 8–10 hours. Here's what to expect.
Hotel pickup — Sydney CBD
Your guide collects you from your city accommodation. Most tours cover the Inner West and Surry Hills. Ask your operator about CBD pickup points.
First Winery Stop — Pokolbin
Typically a boutique estate with a structured tasting of 5–8 wines, including the region's signature semillon and shiraz. Most operators include a guide who contextualises what you're drinking.
Gourmet Lunch
The centrepiece of most full-day tours. Lunch at a winery restaurant — expect 2–3 courses using local produce. Paired wines are often included.
Afternoon Cellar Door Rounds
Two more stops — often including a chocolate, cheese, or distillery pairing. The afternoon pace is more relaxed, with time to browse and purchase.
Return to Sydney
Arrival back at city hotels around 5:00–6:00pm. Most travellers find this a comfortable and complete day — not rushed, genuinely full.
