Region-by-Region Logistics You'll Actually Use

The Barossa Valley sits 60–75 minutes north of Adelaide and remains Australia's most visited wine region, largely because the infrastructure caters well to tour groups. McLaren Vale is closer — about 40 minutes south — and leans heavily on Grenache and Shiraz. The Adelaide Hills (25 minutes from the CBD) and the cooler-climate Tamar Valley (15 minutes from Launceston in Tasmania) work as excellent half-day pairings rather than full-day tours.

The Hunter Valley is 2–2.5 hours north of Sydney via the M1 freeway, which is the realistic route — the old Pacific Highway adds 40 minutes for no scenic benefit. From Melbourne, both the Yarra Valley (60 minutes via the Maroondah Highway, which is the scenic route worth taking) and the Mornington Peninsula (70–90 minutes) make easy day trips, and Peninsula Hot Springs pairs naturally with a Mornington winery crawl. Margaret River is the outlier: it's a 3-hour drive south of Perth, or a 50-minute flight into Busselton-Margaret River Airport, which is worth the extra cost if you're short on days.
