The distance problem
Margaret River is remote by Australian wine region standards. It's roughly 270km south of Perth, about a 3-hour drive on the Albany Highway and Bussell Highway. That distance changes the calculus compared to other wine regions: a casual day trip from the city is not really an option unless you're willing to put in a 6am–10pm day, which most people find exhausting.
But the region is also worth the trip: Margaret River produces some of Australia's best cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, has a celebrated food culture (craft breweries, artisanal producers, exceptional restaurants), dramatic coastline, and limestone caves. If you're going to visit, it's worth doing properly, which usually means at least one night.

3. Day Tour from Perth — Honest Assessment
Margaret River day tours from Perth exist, but at 6am–10pm in the car, they're the longest wine region day trips in Australia.
